- Saturday, January 26, 2002 - The White Stuff... Several weeks ago while I was in the operating room, we got a phone call. "It's snowing outside!" After the procedure, I rushed to a window and huge, flocculent snow flakes were parachuting from the sky. It was snowing in Portland. Apparently, from what I've heard, it doesn't do this very often, maybe once or twice a year. And usually, when it does, it doesn't stick around to cause much trouble. It snowed for maybe an hour and none of it stayed around. I was hoping to go outside and make a snowman (it would have been a very small snowman) but I wasn't able to leave the hospital until late. It has snowed several more times since then, maybe once or twice, but very lightly. As I left the hospital earlier this evening, I was greeted by not only fluffy flakes falling from the sky but layers of the white stuff on the ground as well. As I slapped on my chains, I heard the radio people say that we've had 250 inches of snow fall on Mt. Hood this season. Having never lived in a snowy area before, I have no idea whether that's a lot or not, but to me, it sure does sound like a lot. It's more snow than you'd see in Southern California. Indeed, my aggressive LA driving style doesn't go too well with snow-covered roads, though it makes for an interesting ride. On my way home tonight, the back end of my car lost traction and I spun slowly in a 180 degree arc at approximately 20 mph. No one was hurt (including the car) but it was a sobering experience. I'm heading out to the mountain tomorrow to do some skiing with my buds. I hope my car can make it out to my friend's place. I doubt my car can make it out of the city, so I'm depending on my friend's four-wheel drive and snow tires to get us to the mountain. In other news, my body has taken quite a beating this month from a lack of sleep (due to various reasons). I have recently sworn off both alcohol and women (at least for a week) in an attempt to regain that sense of sanity I once had.
